How the Australian passport photo process works

An Australian passport photo is 35×45 mm with the face measuring 32–36 mm from chin to crown, on a plain light grey or white background. For a paper application you supply two identical prints, one endorsed on the back by your guarantor. Australia also offers a digital photo option for some renewals through the app. Snapfora sizes to 35×45 mm and checks head height and tilt so both prints match and pass the automated check.

Printing an Australian passport photo

Australia Post and many pharmacies offer a passport-photo print service, but you can also tile the 35×45 mm image onto a 6×4 inch sheet and print two identical copies at any Officeworks or chemist photo kiosk, then have your guarantor endorse the back of one. For digital app-based renewals, upload the JPEG directly.

Why Australian passport photos get rejected

  • Face height outside the 32–36 mm range or off-centre framing.
  • Background shadows, or a colour that isn't plain white / light grey.
  • Reflection or glare on glasses — removal is recommended.
  • The two prints not being identical, or the guarantor endorsement missing.
  • A smile, open mouth, or eyes not looking straight at the camera.
  • Red-eye, flash glare, or hair across the face.
