How the Chinese ID & passport photo process works

China's most common formats are the 33×48 mm passport/visa photo and the domestic 一寸 (25×35 mm) and 二寸 (35×49 mm) ID sizes. Passport and visa photos use a plain white background, while many domestic uses (resumes, school, social-security cards) allow white, blue, or red. Digital submissions often have strict pixel and file-size rules — for example 354×472 px for the passport photo, kept within a kilobyte cap. Snapfora outputs the exact pixel size, lets you switch the background colour, and compresses to the file limit so the online system accepts the upload on the first try.

Printing Chinese ID photos

For physical 一寸/二寸 prints, tile the photo onto a 6-inch (4×6) sheet — a standard 6-inch print holds eight 一寸 or several 二寸 photos — and print at any 照相馆 or self-service photo machine, then cut along the lines. For online passport, visa, and exam registration uploads, use the digital JPEG at the exact pixel size and KB limit the portal specifies.

Why Chinese ID photos get rejected

  • Wrong pixel dimensions or a file that exceeds the system's KB cap.
  • Background colour that doesn't match the use — e.g. a red background where white is required for a passport.
  • Head too high or too low in the frame against the 33×48 mm head-position template.
  • Visible retouching or beauty filters on the official passport/visa photo.
  • Hair covering the eyebrows or ears where the format requires them visible.
  • Uneven lighting or a colour cast from indoor bulbs.
