How the German passport photo process works
Germany's biometric Passbild is 35×45 mm with the face measuring 32–36 mm from chin to crown — the head must fill 70–80% of the frame, and the official Foto-Mustertafel template is enforced strictly. The same photo serves both the passport (Reisepass) and the national ID card (Personalausweis). The official guidance prefers a plain light-grey background over pure white, with a neutral expression, mouth closed, and eyes looking straight at the camera. Since November 2024 Germany has moved toward digital capture: many Bürgeramt offices now photograph you on-site at a PointID terminal, but a self-supplied compliant photo is still accepted at offices that allow it and is needed for several online and consular uses. Snapfora sizes to 35×45 mm and flags the 32–36 mm head band so your photo matches the Mustertafel before you book an appointment.
