How the UK passport photo process works

A UK passport photo is 35×45 mm with the face (chin to crown) measuring 29–34 mm, on a plain light grey or cream background — not pure white. The easiest route is the fully digital one: when you apply on GOV.UK you upload a single photo and the system checks it automatically, so a print is optional. The photo must be taken within the last month and show a plain, neutral expression with your mouth closed and eyes open. Snapfora sizes to 35×45 mm and shows the head-height band so you stay inside the 29–34 mm requirement that trips up most home photos.

Printing a UK passport photo

Most UK applicants never print at all — the digital GOV.UK route accepts an uploaded JPEG and is the cheapest, fastest option. If you need a hard copy for a paper application or a child's first passport, tile the 35×45 mm image onto a 6×4 inch sheet and use a Boots, Asda, or Max Spielmann print machine, or any photo kiosk that outputs 6×4 prints, then cut to size along the guides.

Why UK passport photos get rejected

  • Pure white background — UK rules want light grey or cream, and an over-white wall is a common auto-rejection.
  • Head size outside 29–34 mm, usually because the photo was taken too close or cropped too tight.
  • Reflections or glare on glasses; the Passport Office now recommends removing glasses entirely.
  • Hair across the eyes or shadows across the face from overhead lighting.
  • Looking away from the camera, a tilted head, or any hint of a smile.
  • Low resolution or a photo older than one month.
