How the Indian passport photo process works

Since the 2025 move to the ICAO standard, Indian passport photos are 35×45 mm (replacing the old 51×51 mm) on a plain white background, with the face filling roughly 70–80% of the frame. For most Tatkaal and normal applications through Passport Seva, the photo is captured at the Passport Seva Kendra itself, but visa, OCI, and overseas applications still need you to supply a compliant 35×45 mm photo. Snapfora outputs the ICAO 35×45 mm size with the head-height guides so an OCI or visa photo matches the new spec rather than the legacy square.

Printing an Indian passport-size photo

For physical prints, India's ubiquitous local studios will print passport sets cheaply, but you can also tile the 35×45 mm image onto a 4×6 sheet yourself and print at any photo lab. For OCI and most online visa portals you upload the digital JPEG directly — keep it under the portal's file-size cap (often 200 KB–1 MB), which Snapfora handles when you set the digital size.

Why Indian passport & OCI photos get rejected

  • Using the old 51×51 mm square format after the 2025 switch to 35×45 mm ICAO sizing.
  • Coloured or patterned background instead of plain white.
  • Face too small in the frame — ICAO wants the head to fill 70–80% of the height.
  • Shadows behind the head or uneven lighting across the face.
  • Spectacle glare, a head covering that hides the face outline, or a non-neutral expression.
  • Blurry, pixelated, or printed-then-rescanned photos for OCI uploads.
